US intelligence chiefs decline to discuss Trump contacts

The Washington Post separately reported on Tuesday that Coats told associates in March that Trump asked him if he could intervene with then FBI Director Comey to get the FBI to back off its focus on Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser, in its Russian Federation probe, according to officials.

ROGERS: And I've also answered that those conversations are classified and it is not appropriate in an open forum, to discuss those classified conversations. That story lines up with a May 16 New York Times report that, according to a memo Comey wrote before Trump fired him, Trump had asked Comey to "shut down" the Flynn investigation.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is holding two days of highly anticipated hearings that could shed new light on the state of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

House Armed Services committee lawmakers did not raise the issue when National Security Agency Director Adm. Mike Rogers recently appeared before a subcommittee hearing on cyber issues.

And of course, now-fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James B. Comey is testifying to the Senate on Thursday about his conversations with Trump on all this.

The Senate intelligence committee is back in the national spotlight for two days of blockbuster hearings and following news that relations between President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions had reached a boiling point surrounding his recusal from the Justice Department's Russian Federation investigation.

The three will undoubtedly also take questions on their dealings with President Donald Trump and about Comey's firing.

"What you feel isn't relevant, Admiral", King blasted. Coats decided not to do so, the report said.

"I stand by the comments I made; I am not interested in repeating myself sir", Rogers said, before backing off after an awkward pause and saying: "And I don't mean that in a contentious way".

Coats, who was confirmed as Trump's national intelligence director in mid-March, said: "In interacting with the president of the United States or anybody in his administration, I have never been pressured". Coats was a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee in the late 1990s and from 2011 through past year. The sources said Coats concluded after the meeting that Trump's suggestion that he intervene with Comey's investigation would be inappropriate.

Heinrich: "So you don't think the American people deserve to know the answer to that question".

"I am not prepared to go down that road right now", Coats added.

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) pressed Coats and Rogers for a legal justification for refusing to discuss their interactions with Trump. Second-hand reports of Rosenstein's promises and comments trickled out of the meetings, one in the House and one in the Senate, but Wednesday will mark the first time lawmakers can get Rosenstein on the record answering questions himself.

Angus King, a ME independent who caucuses with the Democrats, blasted Rogers in the middle of his questioning.

We know that there was an ongoing FBI investigation.
