San Francisco police respond to shooting

A gunman opened fire at a UPS facility in San Francisco on Wednesday morning, killing three people and later dying of a self-inflicted wound, police say.

UPS spokesman Steve Gaut told The Associated Press that an employee fired inside the facility before the drivers were sent out to do their normal daily deliveries. When he ran to the window, he says there was a brief moment after the four shots and then he says he thinks he heard four more then saw a lot of people running out of the building.

Auto shop owner Robert Kim says he heard about five to eight rapid gunshots.

A woman named Michelle, who did not want to provide her last name, was walking to work across the street from a UPS facility when she saw several UPS employees running down the street.

"UPS confirms there was an incident involving employees within the company's facility in San Francisco earlier this morning", the company said in a statement.

People in the area are advised to shelter in place until instructed otherwise.

In a series of tweets that began just after 9 a.m., police said to avoid the area of 17th Street and Vermont Avenue.

One of the victims, a 46-year-old man who drives for UPS, succumbed to his injuries after he was shot multiple times while trying to help others escape.

San Francisco Assistant Police Chief Toney Chaplin told reporters that officers found wounded victims and brought them to safety Wednesday.

He said the four victims were taken to a hospital but didn't know their conditions.

San Francisco police have confirmed the shooting, but didn't release other information.

Uniformed UPS employees are being led out in a line by officers next to a highway.
