Injured Capitol Police officer throws out first pitch in emotional moment

David Bailey, the injured special agent who threw out the first pitch at the baseball game Thursday night, was interviewed by Inside Edition. "They ran right into those guns and the bullets, and they saved a lot of lives", President Donald Trump said of Griner and Bailey at a news conference Thursday.

Two capitol police officers were wounded in the shooting, authorities said.

"I want to compliment (Majority Whip Steve) Scalise's security detail as well as U.S. Capitol Police and the Alexandria police for their help in this senseless act of violence". He's from Brazil and graduated from North Carolina Central University in 2007.

Asked about being called a "hero", Bailey downplayed that status and said, "I'm just doing my job".

"Everybody probably would have died except for the fact that the Capitol Hill police were there, and the only reason they were there was because we had a member of [House] leadership on our team", Kentucky Sen.

Barton said in a statement, "The suspect was shooting at members and staff on the field".

"Had Steve been sick, or exhausted or lazy and didn't go to practice, then you would have saw a full-fledged massacre", Richmond said.

Bailey was treated and released the same day.

President Trump and First Lady Melania visited the hospital where two officers are recovering from injuries they received after they were shot while protecting political and business officials practicing for a charity baseball game on Wednesday.

"Her heroic actions yesterday don't surprise me in the least", Robinson said.

Kim Dine, who retired previous year as chief of the Capitol Police, said he remembered Griner as someone who "exudes confidence and dedication". "Then someone yelled "shooter" and we knew that we were under assault". Neither he nor relatives could immediately be reached by The Associated Press.

"There will be those who will talk about what's wrong with America but in this case, Officers Griner and Bailey, we saw what's right with America", the Texas Republican said.

"We saw two people risk their lives to save the lives of others", Williams said.
