Scalise doctor hopes for 'excellent recovery' despite risk

Scalise doctor hopes for 'excellent recovery' despite risk

The gunman in the early morning attack at the ballpark in Alexandria, Virginia, was identified as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.

"We are encouraged in the improvement in his condition in the last 36 hours".

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise looks like he will make an "excellent recovery", doctors say - but that wasn't always the case.

A list of names - including some Republican members of Congress - was found with the Alexandria shooter, according to a law enforcement source and Rep. Mo Brooks, who was on the list and present at the practice but unharmed by the shooting. Several other people were also injured in Wednesday's shooting before Scalise's security detail and other police officers gunned down the assailant, who later died.

CBN News has confirmed the Federal Bureau of Investigation recovered a "hit list" with several names of Republican congressmen on the body of 66-year-old James Hodgkinson, the Alexandria shooter.

"The congressman's status remains critical", Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

A congressional staffer and lobbyist were also shot, and another congressman and police officer suffered injuries.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in a statement Friday. Thursday night's annual Congressional Ball Game drew record crowds and, despite an 11-2 rout by Democrats over Republicans, the GOP team took home the trophy as lawmakers dedicated the game to Scalise. The president's meaning was not entirely clear, but Trump went on to say that "Because of him and the tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring - and he's having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought - our country will perhaps become closer, more unified, so important".

Although Scalise was able to talk on the ballfield, by the time he was transported by helicopter to the hospital, he was in shock.

"He was as critical as can be", Sava said.

Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said.

Sava said Scalise has a good possibility of recovery after he was at "imminent risk of death" from the gunshot wound two days ago.
