Trump claims Comey conversations may have been surveilled

On an unrelated note, when asked about reports of a switch-up in the White House communications department that could see him stepping away from the briefing podium and into a more administrative role, Spicer said, "I wouldn't read everything that you see in some of the Washington-based publications".

"When he found out that I, you know, that there may be tapes out there, whether it's governmental tapes or anything else, and who knows, I think his story may have changed", Trump said in an interview taped Thursday and aired Friday morning on Fox and Friends.

Mr Comey was leading the investigation into allegations that Russian Federation tried to sway the election towards Mr Trump when the President fired him on May 9.

It's unclear whether Trump and his surrogates still think Comey lied about the loyalty pledge and Trump's desire to quash the Flynn investigation.

President Donald Trump suggested he was just trying to keep fired FBI Director James Comey honest with his cryptic tweet implying there might be recordings of their private conversations. That probe is also expected to explore the circumstances of Trump's firing of Comey on May 9 and whether that dismissal was an attempt to obstruct the Russian Federation probe. For five-and-a-half weeks, the president and senior White House officials refused to tell the public whether such tapes exist.

This is far from the only time Trump has undermined his own people.

Thanking VA Secretary David Shulkin, Trump gave another of his occasional threats to fire cabinet officials.

The pattern has continued since his election. But his interactions with Comey have done him no legal favors, lawyers say, raising the prospect that his undoing may be his tampering in an investigation rather than the suspicions that led to the probe.

The day after the description of one memo was published by the New York Times on May 16, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller as a special counsel to investigate Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, including potential collusion with Trump associates.

But that shift in rhetoric creates new problems for the Trump administration.

Though the tweets were vague, they carried the implication that Trump had tapes and planned to release them. "He did admit that what I said was right". But I didn't tape, and I don't have any tape, and I didn't tape.

Comey, of course, testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee in a highly viewed hearing on June 8, addressing - among other things - Trump's May tweet about the alleged recordings.

This went on throughout the presidential campaign and into the transition period after Trump had been elected.

Huckabee Sanders and the press office intensified the Wonderland atmospherics at the White House when they refused to let her appearance be shown on video and then described an announcement of this refusal as "NONREPORTABLE".

Robert Mueller, the somber-faced and demanding FBI director who led the bureau through the September 11 attacks, and James Comey, his more approachable and outwardly affable successor, may be poles apart stylistically but both command a wealth of respect in the law enforcement and legal community.
