Internet Explodes After Trump Calls Gold Star Widow a Liar

President Trump early Monday disputed the account of his phone call with a Gold star widow, who provided a description of the call earlier that morning in an interview. The widow also said Trump was "stumbling on trying to remember" her husband's name, which made her "cry even more".

Wilson, who was present for the speaker phone conversation, recalled that Trump said "he knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurts anyway".

La David Johnson was among four who died October 4 in Niger when they were attacked by militants tied to the Islamic State.

The pregnant widow of a fallen US soldier on Monday contradicted President Donald Trump's account of his phone call about her husband's death and said what he told her "made me cry even worse". "I need to see him so I will know that that is my husband", she said.

Fact-checking website Snopes also noted that the post is "dated" October 17 at 3:27 p.m., about an hour before the reported time of Trump's call to Johnson.

Ms Wilson, who was by Mrs Johnson's side during the conversation, later said the billionaire "does not possess the character, empathy or grace to be President of the United States".

Trump tweeted Wilson "fabricated" his statement and the fight escalated through the week. "She is a highly respected Member of Congress who has demonstrated extremely competent leadership on a number of important issues, and we are especially proud of her fearless and uncompromising leadership to fight for the release of almost 300 Nigerian school girls who were kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram". "They told me there was a massive gunfire and that my husband, as of October 4 was missing", she said.

Instead of backing down, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders piled on last Friday and said Mr Kelly was justified in accusing the lawmaker of grandstanding, despite erring on the facts. Wilson was riding with Johnson's family to meet the body and heard the call on speakerphone. "I don't know what's in that box", she said. Johnson said everyone in the auto was listening to Trump's call. And Johnson said her uncle-in-law was Wilson's elementary school principal.

His godsister, Lakia Smith, said Johnson would always come watch her at cheerleading practice.

Johnson was asked if she had anything to say to the president. "It could be empty for all I know". Not only does he owe me an apology but he owes an apology to the American people, because when he lied on me he lied to them, and I don't think that's fair, and I think that's wrong.
