Record-high 64 percent of Americans want marijuana legalized

Record-high 64 percent of Americans want marijuana legalized

64% of Americans support legalizing marijuana for both recreational and medicinal use, the highest support since Gallup first asked the question in 1969.

More Americans than ever think marijuana should be legal, according to a new Gallup poll that found a majority of Republicans supporting legalization for the first time ever.

The poll also showed a majority of Republicans favoring legalization for the first time, with 51 percent expressing support.

In 2011, 50 percent of Gallup survey respondents supported legalization, and in 2001, that number was just 34 percent. Support was only 12% in 1969 when Gallup first started polling adults on this issue. Their results showed 51 percent of Republicans said they believe cannabis should be legal, which is up from 42 percent just a year ago.

In response to the latest numbers, the Marijuana Policy Project, the nation's largest marijuana-focused policy organization, said the increased support for legalization "makes sense". So far, the states that have legalized marijuana have been pretty liberal states (California, Oregon, Washington, Massachusetts, etc.). This is the highest approval rating marijuana legalization has ever reached in a Gallup poll.

Advocates in MI are expected to qualify an initiative for the ballot next year that would regulate marijuana for adults, and at least 18 states are expected to have legalization bills introduced during their 2018 legislative sessions. In 2010 Democrats were nearly twice as likely as Republicans to favor legalization.

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions may want to shut down the marijuana industry, but apparently linking it to violence or claiming that "good people don't smoke marijuana" is not making a convincing enough case for the American people. The margin of error is 4 percentage points. "We do know that legalization results in greater use". In the case of marriage equality, numerous changes in the law came through court rulings that found the laws against same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional and it was ultimately a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court that led to the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide.

Activists from within the marijuana-legalization community celebrated the poll results. In the case of marijuana, changes in the law can only really come through either the legislative process or, as has been the case in many states, through a referendum taken to the voters.
