Qualcomm's latest Apple suit involves Intel

Qualcomm's latest Apple suit involves Intel

Qualcomm sues Apple is a headline which isn't surprising for those who are familiar with a recent string of lawsuits between the two, which have collectively created considerable tension in and out of court. Qualcomm stock dropped by nearly 8% today in the wake of the news.

The two companies are embroiled in a worsening dispute over technology licensing fees that Qualcomm charges for patents that cover the basics of how mobile phone systems work.

Apple in the past used only Qualcomm modem chips for iPhones, but started also procuring the chips from Intel for its iPhone 7 and 7 Plus models previous year.

According to commentators, Apple moving over to Qualcomm rival products would be a big change. When making the request, Apple sent out a message that CC'd an Intel engineer.

"The Qualcomm modem that could be used in the next generation iPhone has already been fully tested and released to Apple", the statement read. "Qualcomm's wireless solutions remain the gold standard for premium tier smartphones".

Apple sued Qualcomm in January 2017 for almost $1 billion, claiming that Qualcomm had "unfairly insisted on charging royalties for technologies they have nothing to do with".

The company started using Intel's broadband modem chips in the iPhone 7. Still, these results are a reflection of the toll that the legal battle between Qualcomm and Apple is taking. There's also a chance that we'll see a new iPad Pro as early as next summer, which could make matters even more complicated. In the filing, Qualcomm reportedly accuses Apple of abusing its commercial leverage to access and then unlawfully using sensitive intellectual property. We also contacted Apple, but did not receive a response.
