Target selling fidget spinners with high levels of lead

But reports are showing that some fidget spinners being sold at Target have high levels of lead. The center circle in the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal contained 1,000 parts per million of lead, according to MASSPIRG. Traces of lead may end up inside a child's body when fingers are transferred from a fidget spinner to a child's mouth or food.

Business Insider says that the legal limit for lead in a children's toy is 100 parts per million.

But here's the catch, on the packaging for the spinner it says that the product is only for kids ages 14 and up.

"The two fidget spinners cited in their letter are clearly marked on the package as 'appropriate for customers ages 14 and older, ' and are not marketed to children", Target spokesman Lee Henderson told CBS News.

CoPIRG is calling for an investigation into how these toys ended up with such high levels of lead, and wants Target to address the problem and ensure that no other fidget spinners have similarly high levels. With the holidays coming around parents are bound to buy a few fidget spinners for their kids. But after some unsafe incidents involving the popular gizmos, the CPSC issued new fidget spinner safety guidance for consumers and businesses. But Target doesn't appear to be backing down, not even to claims that they should move the fidget spinners to another section of the store.

"Safety is one of our top priorities", said a Bulls i Toy spokesperson in an email to the Washington Post. "CPSC stands for the Consumer Product Safety Commission", Kara Cook-Schultz, the nonprofit's toxics director, said in a statement. "Beware of these two fidget spinners, as they have risky amounts of lead".

On Thursday, Cleveland 19 used a lead test - intended for paint and found at hardware stores - to test the product.

Target has failed to comment about why they would sell a product that could be risky for children or adults.

Target and the company that distributes the spinners, Bulls-i-Toy, both stressed that the spinner is not a toy, and thus doesn't fall under the CPSC rules. It's not the first time the toy has been investigated for safety reasons.
