After the decision, Bombardier sold a majority stake in its C Series jet business to European aerospace giant Airbus for no cost.

EgyptAir has agreed to purchase 12 orders from Bombardier with the option for a further 12.

Mr Thompson said Bombardier's CSeries aircraft programme now accounts for 1,000 jobs in the North and every order is welcome.

The EgyptAir deal is valued at $1.1 billion based on list prices.
