TransCanada shuts part of Keystone pipeline after South Dakota oil spill

TransCanada shuts part of Keystone pipeline after South Dakota oil spill

Crews have shut down the Keystone pipeline after an estimated 5,000 barrels of oil leaked in South Dakota.

TRP says it expects the pipeline from Alberta to Cushing, Okla. and to Wood River and Patoka, Ill., to remain shut down while it responds to the leak; the southern leg of the Keystone system from Cushing to the Gulf Coast remains open.

"Regulators in the neighboring state of Nebraska are expected to announce a decision on the company's proposed Keystone XL pipeline next week".

The company said in a press release that the leak was discovered after a drop in the pipeline's pressure was detected.

Western Canada Select heavy blend crude for December delivery was trading at $14.50 below the West Texas Intermediate benchmark at late afternoon on Thursday, down slightly from $14.20 the day before.

The spill occurred in Marshall County, SD near the small town of Amherst.

The leak, which it said happened about 35 kilometres south of its Ludden pump station on a right-of-way, comes as Nebraska Public Service Commission is set to vote on the Keystone XL project on November 20 to clear the last major regulatory hurdle for the $8 billion project.

Keystone carries crude from the oil sands in Canada to refineries in IL and Texas, and to a distribution center in Oklahoma.

When TransCanada first proposed Keystone I, the company promised a state-of-the-art pipeline which would "meet or exceed world-class safety and environmental standards".

The Keystone pipeline has leaked in South Dakota before, as recently as last spring.

About 5,000 barrels of oil spilled Thursday.

The Keystone XL pipeline got federal US approval in March when President Donald Trump overturned former President Barack Obama's rejection of the project in 2015.
