Surgeon carries out first head transplant on dead bodies

In a freaky 18-hour operation, a team lead by Dr Xiaoping Ren of Harbin Medical University in China allegedly carried out what is being termed as the world's first human head transplant on a corpse, reported The Telegraph.

The transplant connected the spine, nerves and blood vessels of two persons.

The procedure was carried out by a team led by Dr Xiaoping Ren, who previous year grafted head to the body of a monkey.

Italian Professor Surgeon Sergio Canavero, Director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group, said they would soon be moving to a living human.

According to the newspaper, Canavero did not provide any concrete proof for his claim, but said that "the paper will be released in a few days".

Dr. Sergio Canavero said the procedure would take place in China because the US and Europe would not allow it.

He said:"A full head swap between brain dead organ donors is the next stage".

He also pointed out that a human head transplant surgery can be carried out in 18 hours, the timeframe his team has set for itself. He has signed up his first patient, a Russian man called Valery Spiridinov who will have his head frozen and then grafted onto a new donor body, according to his doctor.

Professor Canavero claimed that the procedure took place in China because "the Americans did not understand" and wouldn't fund the experiments, according to USA Today.

But not everyone is convinced Professor Canavero could actually ever achieve a successful head transplant. Everyone said it was impossible.

Asked if the final plan to go through the procedure would continue throughout the world after the preliminary tests in China, Professor Canavero said, given the amount of criticism he received, he felt he would not be transplanting internationally.

The medical community thinks the surgery is both "unethical" and "dangerous".

Over the years, Canavero has perpetuated the idea of the human head transplant - and the medical breakthroughs it implies - by keeping himself in the news.
