Robinho sentenced to nine years in jail for sexual assault

"With regards to the news involving the forward Robinho, regarding something that happened some years ago, we would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the allegation, affirming that he was not involved in the incident", the statement read.

Robinho, who now plays for Athletico Mineiro in his homeland, has been capped 100 times as an global player for Brazil, also having become the Premier League's most expensive star when he signed for Man City in 2008 for £32.5m.

Former Manchester City football star Robinho has reportedly been sentenced to nine years in prison for rape by a Milan court.

Robinho, who was part of the Milan squad at the time, had strenuously denied the charges.

ANSA reported that five other men were also accused of sexually assaulting an Albanian woman and that another member of the group, Ricardo Falco, was also sentenced to nine years in jail.

Robinho's sentence will be put on hold until the appeals process is completed.

"All legal steps are already being taken regarding this decision in the first instance".

Robinho played more than 40 games for Manchester City between 2008 and 2010, scoring 14 domestic goals for the club, after signing from Real Madrid.

He spent just one season in China before moving back to Brazil with Atletico Mineiro in 2016.

A lack of discipline, however, began to dog Robinho, and he was soon returning to Santos before a spell in Italy where the assault took place.
