But spirits were more likely to elicit some positive feelings than either beer or wine. Participants were asked what feelings they associated with the different beverages, including these emotions: energized, relaxed, sexy, confident, tired, aggressive, ill, restless, and tearful.

The GDS, which is provided in 11 languages, includes specific questions on alcohol consumption and the feelings associated with drinking beer, spirits and red or white wine when at home or when out.

Most people drink alcohol seeking positive effects, said the study's co-author, Mark Bellis, director of policy, research and global development at Public Health Wales.

Spirits are also the most likely to make you feel sad.

If you want to chill out, fill your glass with red wine; at 52.8 percent, it landed the highest rate of reporting for feeling relaxed out of any of the other options.

A quarter of red wine drinkers report feeling sexy after a tipple, a study has found. "For centuries, the history of rum, gin, vodka and other spirits has been laced with violence, and it is true that spirits were more strongly associated with being tearful", said Professor Mark Bellis, director of policy, research and worldwide development at Public Health Wales. The journal points out that: "Respondents' level of alcohol dependency was strongly associated with feeling all emotions, with the likelihood of aggression being significantly higher in possible dependent versus low risk drinkers". This can result in a quicker stimulating effect as blood alcohol levels increase.

Drinking gin really does make you sad: Study discovers how spirits affect your emotions

Marketing plays into this, Professor Bellis said: "There is a lot of content in alcohol promotion to suggest people will get those positive emotional responses they may be seeking". They may also be consumed in different social occasions so people may be drinking them deliberately to feel the drunken effect quickly while other types of drink are more likely to be consumed slowly or with food. In the heaviest drinking group, over 60 percent reported feelings of aggression from drinking.

A survey of 29 thousand people showed that the sensation from taking alcohol doses in people are similar no matter what country you live respondents, their religious or cultural identification.

It is worth also bearing in mind that there are compounds apart from alcohol in different drinks. Illness and tearfulness came in at 19.29 percent and 17.10 percent - low compared to spirits. The researches noted that the emotions were more likely to be felt by dependent drinkers versus casual drinkers.

RG: Were there differences between men and women? . But it's not all doom and gloom in the spirit world; vodka, gin and rum turned out to be the most energy and confidence boosting cocktails of the bunch, with more than half of all respondents admitting to feelings of Dutch courage.

Research has found that different types of alcohol have different effects on personality. So manage to solve the problem of increasing the number of people with alcohol dependence and the level of violence in society, he added.
