Retailers Boosted Black Friday with Deals, Good Customer Service

"There had been much conjecture this year about whether Black Friday would be a hit or miss with United Kingdom shoppers, and many retailers followed the lead of their U.S. counterparts, extending their promotional campaigns over two weeks or more, which did risk diluting the impact of the event", he said.

As of 10 a.m. Monday, Americans had spent almost $14 billion online since Thanksgiving Day, when many companies started their Black Friday sales, according to Adobe Analytics. By 2016, the number of online retailers increased by 460 percent to more than 20,000 establishments, well above the growth rate of their competitors.

USA consumers kicked off the holiday shopping season with an online frenzy, breaking spending records over Thanksgiving and on Cyber Monday.

This stronger-than-expected performance was achieved in spite of a number of factors that could have exerted a negative influence on growth, such as Black Friday occurring before pay day this year, and many retailers launched discounting campaigns in advance of the day itself. Stores offered substantial discounts, creative gimmicks and gifts to draw discount hunters out of their homes, but some shoppers said they were just scanning the merchandise, saving their cash for internet purchases.

The growing online shopping trend has forced the toy chain Toys R Us and apparel retailers True Religion, The Limited, Rue21 and Payless Shoe Source to file for bankruptcy in 2017.

Cyber Monday is all about online retailers and their attempts to lure shoppers to their sites by offering unbelievable sales on some items in the hope that shoppers will end up spending more while they are there. The U.S. Census Bureau highlighted data Monday which showed only 9.4 percent of sales were attributed to online shopping during the fourth quarter of a year ago, which covers the holiday shopping season. Fundivo, a small business loan adviser, found that by 2015, 49 percent of Americans said they have shopped on Cyber Monday.

"I like to see what I'm buying".

The shift to online buying is a major factor as industry analysts watch how the nation's malls fare this holiday shopping season.

"Customers today want to go to a store-the sights, the smells, the sounds", CEO Jeff Gennette said in an interview last Friday.

"I'd much rather do online", Boyd said.
