Leach meets with Tennessee AD about coaching job

FILE - in this October 21, 2017, file photo, Washington State coach Mike Leach watches from the sideline during the second half of the team's NCAA college football game against Colorado in Pullman, Wash. "He has been a student-athlete, a head coach, and a father of UT student-athletes", Davenport said.

But as the deal with Schiano came together, Tennessee fans revolted.

Leach didn't respond from a text message from The Spokesman-Review and a WSU spokesperson did not wish to comment on the situation.

The Associated Press, citing an anonymous source, also wrote of the Los Angeles meeting, saying Leach was scheduled subsequently to fly back to Pullman.

Leach, 56, has been at Washington State for six years and is 38-37, but 26-12 the last three seasons, including 19-8 in the Pac-12. Or you're a good coach; there's rumors you're leaving.

The online site Football Scoop reported last week that Tennessee was interested in Leach, also saying the Cougars would have no qualms about promoting defensive coordinator Alex Grinch to the top job should Leach leave. "I'm not going to talk about coaches at any other schools or any other places".

Several factors have fueled speculation about Leach's future in recent weeks.

Fulmer had publicly expressed his interest in the athletic director position, but Currie was chosen as Hart's replacement instead. That was Bill Moos, who jumped to Nebraska in October, and he has yet to be replaced.

Tennessee fired former coach Butch Jones on November 12 and the Volunteers reportedly offered the job to Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, but then backed out of the deal due to backlash from Tennessee boosters and fans.

Schiano has denied the claim. That list includes Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, Duke coach David Cutcliffe, North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren, Purdue coach Jeff Brohm and recently-fired Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin.

Currie, previously the athletic director at Kansas State, had been on the job at Tennessee for just nine months.
