Nine dead in Taliban attack on Pakistan school

Police said at least three militants opened fire at security guards near the gates of the Agriculture Training Institute, injuring one of them before making their way inside and targeting the student accommodation.

Inter-Services Public Relations informed that two soldiers who were injured during the attack have been shifted to Combined Military Hospital for treatment.

Five attackers were killed, police officer Muhammad Nadeem said.

Pakistan media Geo news reported that three attackers, with their faces covered, entered the Directorate, located next to the University of Agriculture, and started firing.

Reportedly, an explosion was also heard amid intense firing.

The area where the incident occurred is a hub for educational institutions including the University of Peshawar.

Due to holiday on the eve of Eid Milad-un-Nabi, the hostel was officially closed.

An eyewitness said, "We were sleeping when we heard gunshots".

Shehzad Akbar, medical director of Hayatabad Medical Complex, said six people died of their wounds and 18 were being treated.

Hospital authorities said nine persons mostly students were killed in the attack.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan condemned the attack in Peshawar.

The compound includes a hostel facility for diploma students and there were around 50 students there at the time of attack, police said.

Pakistan's Taliban has claimed the responsibility for the attack.

Around eight to 10 people were reportedly evacuated by the security officials.

Violence erupted over the weekend after police and paramilitary forces launched a bungled attempt to clear the sit-in, igniting fresh demonstrations in cities across the country, including in Lahore and Karachi. In 2014, Pakistani Taliban gunmen murdered more than 140 children in Peshawar, according to the BBC, making it one of the deadliest attack in the country's history.
