SCO summit to begin in Sochi

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi leaves for Russian Federation today to represent Pakistan at a two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit beginning in Sochi today.

The prime minister further said that harmonising laws and regulations for trade practices, movement of merchandise and custom rules will facilitate better trade among partners. In June, India along with Pakistan had become a full- fledged member of the SCO. Its establishment was announced by leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan in Shanghai in 2001. The retreat would be followed by a plenary session of the CHG, where Abbasi would deliver a speech.

The summit beginning on Thursday is likely to discuss issues relating to the regional security scenario including situation in the Gulf and Afghanistan.

The SCO Summit is also being attended by Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

Afghanistan's Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah has called on the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to use their leverage in bringing Afghan militant groups to the negotiations table. The SCO major goals is to strengthen mutual trust and good neighborliness between member states, assist their efficient cooperation in the political, trade, economic, sci-tech and cultural sectors, and also in education, energy, transport, tourism, environmental protection, joint maintaining of peace, security and stability in the region. The decision, in principle, to give membership to Pakistan was taken by the SCO Heads of States meeting held in Ufa, Russia, in 2015.
