Aaron Boone: Making sense of the Yankees new manager

Boone, who starred at Villa Park High before a 12-year career in the major leagues, has been an ESPN baseball analyst since 2010. Steinbrenner had previously said he was reluctant to have a manager with no experience in the job.

He propelled the team to victory in the 2003 American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox with a game seven series winning home run.

That hire was first broken by The New York Daily News, and was later confirmed by ESPN. "But I would also say in a way, I've been preparing for this job for my entire life. He certainly connected with me about what his thoughts are and the types of people he thinks we should play on". He tore a knee ligament during a pickup basketball game in the offseason after his home run off Boston's Tim Wakefield and was released by NY, which replaced him by acquiring Alex Rodriguez. His grandfather Ray Boone was an infielder for six teams from 1948 through 1960. and his father, Bob, was one of the most durable catchers in major league history, lasting from 1972 through 1990. "I've been going to the ballpark since I was 3 or 4 years old".

Now 44, Boone has never been a manager or even a coach at any level since retiring as a player after the 2009 season.

During the interview process, Cashman consulted with Alex Rodriguez, but the former Yankee was not a candidate.

Boone's father has worked for the Washington Nationals since December 2004 and now is an assistant general manager.

"It's a great place to work", Cashman said. Boone, who is nearly nine years younger than Girardi, will perhaps forge stronger bonds with a young core that includes right fielder Aaron Judge, catcher Gary Sanchez, first baseman Greg Bird and pitchers Luis Severino and Dellin Betances.

In his conference call with the news media following his interview, Boone outlined his conversation with the Yankees, which he said centered around his stance and background in analytics and his communication style with players.

"I find myself managing games all the time and thinking about strategies and how I would handle different situations", Boone said.

"I understand what it is to be a Yankee", he said. Boone was one of six candidates to interview for the job, beating out a group that included Eric Wedge and Carlos Beltran.

Larry Rothschild is signed to return as the Yankees' pitching coach for next season, but the team must now begin filling the rest of Boone's staff.
