Blitzboks beat New Zealand to win the Dubai Sevens

Blitzboks beat New Zealand to win the Dubai Sevens

The reigning world series champions unleashed all their attacking firepower in what was a breathtaking display of sevens rugby across the two days.

The 14-12 U.S. win reversed the pool play result, where the Kiwis dominated 45-14, and is the first time the Black Ferns Sevens have lost a match since January - when they were also beaten by the Americans.

The reigning series champions fell to a 14-12 defeat after a late converted try handed the Americans a shock victory.

Samuel Oliech stepped up to convert but Uganda offered an instant response through Solomon Okia who capitalized on poor handling from the Shujaa to score his fourth try in Dubai which was converted to leave the tie level at 7-7.

After losing to New Zealand in the semifinal, England captain Tom Mitchell, said: "It's tough to take and terrible to lose but they seized their chances better than we did".

The Kiwis had remained unbeaten in pool play and through the quarter and semi- finals at the season-opening Dubai Sevens, but never really recovered from a storming South African start in the final. Cecil Afrika managed to scoop up the ball out the back of the breakdown and dot it down.

Meanwhile, Snyman's teammate and last year's World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year Seabelo Senatla said that it was a great performance. The Pacific Islanders got the conversion and won the restart, but knocked on to thwart their chances of Dubai glory. Other Shujaa tries were scored by Eden Agero, Dan Sikuta, Oscar Ayodi and Brian Tanga with Solomon Okia and Phillip Wokorach grounding Cranes' tries.

But just as the New Zealanders were punished for an indiscretion so, too, were the BlitzBoks, who lost Rosco Specman to the sin-bin soon after the resumption of play after half-time. "We got stuck by our own line early in the second half and that killed us".
