Guardiola regrets Redmond rant after City victory

Guardiola regrets Redmond rant after City victory

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss told reporters afterwards that he was merely telling the 23-year-old how much he admired him as a player - a version of events Redmond corroborated with a statement issued via his Twitter account on Thursday.

Redmond went public on the matter after an article in The Sun newspaper accused Guardiola of aiming foul and abusive language towards him and insisted the Catalan's "intense and aggressive" approach was wholly well-intentioned.

Guardiola, though, was let off with a warning from referee Paul Tierney after his wild celebrations on the pitch following Raheem Sterling's stoppage-time victor at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. "I have to do that, hopefully I can improve".

Guardiola was seen in animated conversation with Redmond after the game and the Spaniard defended his actions by saying that he told Southampton winger that he is a better player than trying to play defensive football and wasting time. But they didn't want to play, they were time-wasting from the ninth minute.

The FA have asked Guardiola for his observations after he was pictured in what looked like an angry exchange with the player following Premier League leaders Manchester City's dramatic late win against the Saints on Wednesday. "I didn't know him last season, I realised how good he is" was what Guardiola claimed before Redmond came to his support.

He added: "I've faced this kind of team a lot in my career and I have to think how to beat them".

"You can agree or not, but if I'm explaining what happened and the people don't believe me then let's cancel our press conferences and just play the games".

I've just seen this story and felt I had to say something and clear a few things that are floating around right now.

Guardiola said he would "never judge the way opponents play against one of my teams".

"[On Wednesday] he could not attack because they defend all the time, but that is what it is".
