Israeli aircraft reportedly attack Iranian military base near Damascus

Israeli aircraft reportedly attack Iranian military base near Damascus

UK-based monitoring group - the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, earlier reported explosions near Damascus, which it said were caused by a suspected Israeli missile attack.

The "blatant assault" led to material losses at the site in the countryside around the capital, the Syrian state media reported.

Twelve Iranian military personnel were killed in an alleged Israeli air strike on an Iranian base in Syria Friday night, Arabic media reported Saturday.

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said the missile strike targeted a military base near Kesweh, south of Damascus.

Israel had no comment on the report, but Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had recorded a statement last week that was presented at the Saban Forum, taking place in Washington this weekend, that Israel "will not allow Iran to base itself in Syria and threaten Israel".

It says that Israeli fighter jet was flying at a low altitude over Lebanon's Baalbek region near Syrian border when Syrian missiles were launched.

Iran has provided critical support to President Bashar al-Assad's military in fighting Syrian rebels and Islamic State militants. This military facility has never been confirmed by anybody as actually belonging to Iran, but Israeli outlets played that narrative up as part of the "Iranian threat". In 1967, Israel took control of the Golan Heights. Satellite images commissioned by the BBC show construction activity at the site from January to October, 2017.
