Missing 3-Year-Old Is Believed to Be Dead, Police Say

Investigators think the girl is dead, but they have not found her body, the sheriff's office said in a statement that did not say how authorities think the girl was killed.

Authorities in North Carolina say they have arrested a suspect in connection with the disappearance of 3-year-old Mariah Woods, a girl whom they believe is probably dead. He is also charged with second-degree burglary, felony larceny and possession of stolen property, authorities said.

Kimrey is being held on a more than one million dollar bond.

"Due to the evidence gathered during the course of the investigation, it is believed that Mariah is deceased", Onslow County authorities and the FBI said in a joint statement.

The FBI released this photo of Mariah Woods, who was reporting missing on November 27, 2017.

The search was organized in connection with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

Since then, professional investigators and volunteers have fanned out across the woods near her home, neighbors have been asked to search their property and a dive team has searched a portion of Southwest Creek under U.S. Highway 17.

The FBI said it has been sending "items of interest" to its lab in Quantico, Virginia, for priority testing in the case. The FBI also joined the search for Mariah. Jetta Long revealed that her daughter was born with a shortened leg, so she said she understood how her little girl could have been mistaken for the missing toddler.

NBC affiliate WRAL that Kimrey lived in the home with Mariah and her mother. "Someone just walked right up in there, grabbed the 3-year-old out of the bed and she didn't cry, she didn't scream?" "This is my world, this is my angel", she said. Please just bring her back safe and sound - she's my baby, she's my everything'. She was last seen in her Jacksonville home late Sunday night.

"The focus of this investigation has changed from a missing child to homicide case", Meador added.
