Yemen rebel ally to Saudis: Let's 'turn the page'

Yemen rebel ally to Saudis: Let's 'turn the page'

The army said government forces had repelled a Houthi attack on Mt. Sebahtal in the northern Saada province, with the support of coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia, according to 26sepnews.net, Yemen's national military website.

Saudi Arabia says that it has intercepted a second missile fired towards the country by Houthi rebels in Yemen.

"I call on our brothers in neighbouring countries.to stop their aggression and lift the blockade. and we will turn the page", the Saleh said in a televised speech on Saturday.

The coalition has been fighting to defeat the Iran-backed Houthis along with Mr Saleh's forces in Yemen since March 2015.

Three-fourths of Yemenis need some kind of humanitarian assistance to meet basic needs, worldwide observers have said, with more than 17 million people facing food insecurity, including 8.4 million at risk of starvation.

Tens of thousands of Yemeni rebel supporters gathered in Sanaa on Thursday a day after deadly clashes between the Huthis and their allies sparked fears of further violence in the rebel-held capital. Violent clashes between rival factions in Yemen's rebel-held capital signal the disintegration of the rebel alliance at war with a Saudi-led coalition for almost three years.

Saudi Arabia has been leading a coalition of Gulf states against Houthi rebels who ousted the pro-Saudi, internationally-recognized government in Yemen in 2015. The country has since fallen into chaos and Mr Saleh later joined the Houthis to drive Mr Hadi out of the capital in 2014.

In a statement carried by the Saudi-owned Al-Hadath channel, the coalition said it was "confident of the will of the leaders and sons" of Saleh's GPC party to return to Arab fold.

Some reports said Mr Saleh's fighters had seized control of a key Houthi command post.

The Saudi-led coalition welcomed Saleh's remarks. "The priority has been and still is to confront the forces of aggression".

Abdel-Malek al-Houthi, the leader of the rebels, called on Saleh to "show more wisdom and maturity" in a separate statement.

He told Yemenis all across the country that if they support him, "to defend the nation, the republic and the revolution".

A statement from Saleh's General People's Congress Party said three guards were killed when Houthi forces attacked the house of Tarek Saleh, Ali Abdullah Saleh's nephew, adding that they also besieged the residence of Ibrahim Sharaf, a party member and foreign minister of the Sanaa-based government.

The GPC appealed to the army and security forces to remain neutral in the conflict.

The war in Yemen is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, killing at least 10,000 people and leading to widespread hunger and disease.
