McMaster: Potential for war with North Korea 'increasing every day'

But even some Trump advisers say USA military options are limited when Pyongyang could launch an artillery barrage on the South Korean capital Seoul - only around 50 kilometres from the border and home to 10 million people.

"It's insane to send spouses and children to South Korea given the provocation of North Korea", Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said on CBS's "Face the Nation".

"I think it's increasing every day, which means that we are in a race, really, we are in a race to be able to solve this problem", McMaster told an audience at the Reagan National Defense Forum in Simi Valley.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a foreign policy hawk, told CBS' "Face the Nation" the United States moves closer to "preemptive war" with every new North Korean missile or nuclear test.

U.S. Air Force aircraft arrived in South Korea on Saturday to participate in a joint aerial drill just a week after North Korea launched a ballistic missile.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday that he believes it's time to start moving the families of American military personnel out of South Korea as North Korea pushes the US closer to a military conflict.

A South Korean defense official confirmed to CNN on Sunday that the U.S. is sending dozens of high-end fighters, bombers and support aircraft to the drills.

These aircraft will stay in South Korea for the week. The larger size of the first and second stages allows the missile to fly a greater distance with a larger payload.

But it is the stealth fighters that experts say pose the biggest threat to Pyongyang.

Graham expressed confidence in the Trump administration's ability to manage the growing conflict with North Korea.

Graham said this development showed conflict is approaching.

"It is an open, all-out provocation against the DPRK, which may lead to a nuclear war any moment", it said in an editorial on Sunday, using the North's official name.

But it also put up bravado over the presence of the F-22s and F-35s.

To celebrate the missile launched last Wednesday, the ruling Workers Party's official daily Rodong Sinmun covered its front page with color photographs showing thousands of tightly packed soldiers and people applauding in Pyongyang's Kim Il-Sung square, which was decorated with large portraits of the North's late leaders.

A United States official said Saturday technical analysis of that missile's flight is ongoing but the "the North Koreans had problems with re-entry".

North Korea said the new missile soared to an altitude of about 4,475 km (2,780 miles), more than 10 times the height of the International Space Station, and flew 950 km during its 53-minute flight - higher and longer than any North Korean missile, before landing in the sea near Japan.
