Why we lost to Manchester United - Wenger

Why we lost to Manchester United - Wenger

Arsenal got back into the match in the 49th when United defender Marcos Rojo tried and failed to play Alexandre Lacazette offside.

Discussing the Pogba red card, he said: "I don't know".

There was much to admire in Arsenal's attacking play but they never fully recovered after defensive sloppiness allowed Antonio Valencia and Jesse Lingard to put a livewire United side 2-0 up after 11 minutes.

"The game was fantastic", United manager Jose Mourinho said.

Twitter reacts as Manchester United manage to steal away three points from the more dominant Arsenal, who will be kicking themselves after not being able to capitalise on some serious pressure from start to finish.

"If it was hard, no; if it was mud, no - the pitch is absolutely attractive but I think they were a bit too much".

"We played well but there is nothing more frustrating when you have that quality of performance and nothing to show for it at the end".

"On one side, I feel extremely sorry for the players because their attitude was impeccable until the end". Do I think the players think that? Yes. We were too on the edge mentally maybe - you can not be in a game like that.

"There were incredible individuals performances and collectively we were very strong". The Ecuadorean quickly drove forward and exchanged passes with Paul Pogba.

After that David De Gea kept them at bay with a goalkeeping masterclass which included a Premier League record-equalling 14 saves, until Lacazette gave them hope.

And the 25-year-old marshalled the Manchester United midfielder expertly during their thrilling victory over title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening.

That said, Wenger was amazed they did not make more of the chances they created, especially once Paul Pogba was given a straight red card with 15 minutes remaining.

"We didn't start well at all at the back but overall our performance was, for patches, absolutely brilliant", he told BBC Sport.
