Ex-president of Yemen killed by rebels

Houthi militants react as they ride on a truck after Yemen's former president Ali Abdullah Saleh was killed, in Sanaa, Yemen December 4, 2017.

His killing was later confirmed by Saleh's political party, the General People's Congress (GPC).

But that alliance unravelled over the past week, with heavy fighting across the capital, and Saleh was shot dead by Huthi fighters after he fled the city.

According to Al-Jazeera, Saleh was killed by the rebels in a rocket-propelled grenade and shooting attack on his vehicle at a checkpoint outside Sanaa. He continued to be a leader despite being forced to resign as a result of the people's protests. Moreover, after an attempt to assassinate him in Al-Nahdeen Mosque, everyone thought Saleh was done, but he spent months receiving treatment for his burns at Riyadh Military Hospital and surprised everyone with his return to continue to rule Sanaa and lead political and military battles.

In a televised speech Monday, Houthi leader Abdel Malek al Houthi declared victory against Saleh.

The Huthis announced Saleh's death on the rebels' Al-Masirah television station. Meanwhile, aerial bombardment and blockades of Yemeni territory, carried out with the assistance of Western powers, have put millions of civilians in the impoverished country at risk of mass starvation. Most people were indoors, and streets were deserted amid a state of fear as the Houthis asserted full control.

Mr Saleh, 75, had said in a speech on Saturday that he was ready for a "new page" in ties with the coalition and called the Houthis a "coup militia", leading them to accuse him of betrayal. Two of Saleh's associates have confirmed and a third official from the government of Yemen's internationally recongnized president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, has also confirmed. He remained, however, a key player in the years that followed and played a pivotal role in the country's ongoing conflict.

In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition intervened to reinstate Hadi's government.

"You can not say this is the end of his political movement, but it's a very big blow", he said.

Mack told VOA, before news of Mr. Saleh's death, the former president "wanted to have one chance to restore his reputation, which has been terribly, terribly damaged during the past decade".

The tactical alliance between Saleh and the Houthis had often appeared fragile, with both groups suspicious of each other's ultimate motives and sharing little ideological ground. "We can only be sure that the Houthis are now united under one leadership".
