Russia Pays a Price for Doping Scandal

Russia Pays a Price for Doping Scandal

Some of the country's athletes will be allowed to compete under the tag of "Olympic Athlete of Russia", if they satisfy strict conditions that show they have a doping-free background. Athletes in other Summer Olympic sports could compete only if certified by their respective worldwide federations.

International Olympic Committee commission chairman Samuel Schmid says the doping program "was under the authority of the Russian sports ministry".

The news comes after the IOC announced that they will be taking steps to suspend the Russian Olympic Committee for "systematic manipulation of the anti-doping rules and system".

In Rio, Russia was allowed to field a team that was one-third the normal size, with the IAAF refusing to allow any Russians to compete.

"This was an unprecedented attack on the integrity of the Olympic Games and sport".

Mutko receives a lifetime Olympic ban for his involvement in Russian doping, raising questions as to whether he can continue in his role as head of the organising committee for next year's World Cup.

Jim Walden, lawyer for whistle-blower and head of Russia's anti-doping program Dr. Grigory Rodchenkov, made his first public comments following the announcement of the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding banning Russian Federation following investigations of a doping scheme.

The US Olympic Committee praised the IOC's announcement.

The Winter Olympics will be held from February 9-25.

The Russian authorities have vehemently denied any state involvement in doping and pledged to work with worldwide sports bodies to curb the use of banned performance-enhancing drugs in the country.

"An Olympic boycott has never achieved anything", IOC President Thomas Bach said at a news conference.

In his affidavit, Rodchenkov said: "I know I have disappointed many friends and colleagues with my duplicity while serving as director of the Moscow lab". He and other members of the French team that got bronze in the men's 4 x 10-kilometer relay in Sochi are now in line for the silver medal that was stripped in November from the Russian team.

However, the commission said it had not found "any documented, independent and impartial evidence confirming the support or the knowledge of this system by the highest State authority". Sochi 2014 President Dmitry Chernyshenko has been removed from the 2022 IOC Coordination Commission.

Ahead of the anti-doping agencies of 17 countries, including the United States, had demanded the International Olympic Committee impose a blanket ban, issuing a collective statement in September that it was time for the body to stop "paying lip-service" to the anti-doping fight.
