Flu cases double as experts worry this season could be particularly bad

Four states already have widespread flu activity, while there was no real spread at this point past year, according to NBC News.

But she said it's too early to predict what strain will predominate or how severe the season will be. "We generally start seeing an increase about now, and we'll gradually see more as time goes on".

Health officials say there are a number of signs pointing to a potentially rough flu season. "They're just telling you there's an iceberg there". Next are, in order, York, Cumberland and Androscoggin counties. From Oct. 1 to December 2, a total of 254 confirmed flu cases have been reported in Philadelphia and its four suburban counties, with 80 of those cases in Delaware County.

Australia has seen record-high numbers of flu cases, including an uptick in the number that are particularly severe, the New England Journal of Medicine reported.

Fleming said four might not seem like a lot but confirmed cases "are the tip of the iceberg".

Doctors at St. Anthony's Medical Center say they saw only three flu cases at this time in 2016.

Though this years flu vaccine has low expectations, Martindale strongly believes people should not abandon the shot.

"I think that the key preventative strategy, regardless of how effective that vaccine is going to be this year in the United States, is to get vaccinated", says Dr. Lopez.

Still, McGeer said there's good evidence accumulated over time that getting the flu shot every year "is a safer and healthier thing to do for myself and better for my patients and my family". "Once it's here, it'll spread like a brushfire".

The authors want that however imperfect, though, current influenza vaccines remain a valuable public health tool, and it is always better to get vaccinated than not to get vaccinated.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has declared the first week in December National Influenza Vaccination Week. A person can contract the flu by breathing in these tiny droplets.

Added to that uncertainty is the question of how effective this season's vaccine may be in preventing people from getting the flu.

No doubt, the flu vaccine has saved millions and millions of lives over the last 80 years, but it's still a bit of a crap-shoot year to year.

Despite those misgivings, she encourages the elderly and those with underlying heart and lung conditions or with suppressed immune systems, who are vulnerable to influenza and its complications, to get their shot to obtain "all the protection you can get".
