Apple Fixes HomeKit Security Issue In Next OTA Update

Apple Fixes HomeKit Security Issue In Next OTA Update

It allowed third-party remote control of these HomeKit connected accessories, such as lights and thermostats as well as the more serious devices like locks and door openers, posing a potentially serious security problem.

The report from 9to5Mac claims that the vulnerability has been demonstrated to them, and like we said, this involves HomeKit-connected devices such as smart locks and garage door openers. The flaw was first spotted by 9to5Mac, which was later confirmed by Apple. "The fix temporarily disables remote access to shared users, which will be restored in a software update early next week".

The flaw in iOS software exposed key connected home hardware for unauthorized access.

Apple released their iOS 11.2 software update last weekend, the update was rolled out quickly to fix a date bug in iOS. It appears to be a hard one to replicate and doesn't impact earlier builds of the operating system. However, other more security-focused smart devices were also accessible which could be be utilised to grant an unauthorised person access to a HomeKit users' home.

Apple has been making news headlines in the past few weeks for security issues in its iOS and macOS products. After the bug in the HomeKit was reported to the Cupertino iPhone maker, Apple issued an emergency patch to address the security flaws.

For now, Apple has applied a server-side fix that closes the vulnerability, but it has the side effect of breaking some HomeKit functionality. For now, users with 11.2 can not have remote HomeKit functionality until Apple releases an update next week.
