IDF destroys Hamas terror tunnel, second time in recent weeks

The Israeli military on Sunday said it has destroyed a tunnel built by the Hamas militant group that stretched from the Gaza Strip several hundred meters (yards) into Israeli territory, declaring a breakthrough in its war against underground threats from the Palestinian enclave.

This is the second Gaza attack tunnel Israel has uncovered and destroyed in the past six weeks.

Conricus said that "to the best of our knowledge" there were no such casualties on Sunday, though he added that the tunnels could be "death traps" for Gaza gunmen. A network of Gaza tunnels allowed Hamas gunmen to blindside Israel's superior forces during the 2014 war and the Israelis, with U.S. help, have since stepped up work on counter-measures. It now seems that there is a possibility to discover additional terror tunnels, which challenges Hamas from restraining itself.

Hamas, the armed group that controls Gaza, declined to comment.

The tunnel was "a blatant breach of Israel's sovereignty, an unacceptable situation which prompted the IDF's actions", the military said, and its exposure was "an operational success based on advanced technology, a testimony to the IDF's upgraded abilities". It was located about 1 kilometer from an Israeli community. The tunnel is believed to have belonged to the Hamas terror organization.

The move is being seen as a furious retaliation to US President Donald Trump's decision to officially recognise Jeruselum as Israel's capital.

"Our battle for Jerusalem is going on round the clock, above and under the ground", the statement said.
