NASA and Google to Announce AI Breakthrough

Key researchers will discuss what has been learned using Google's machine learning approach to artificial intelligence to analyze data from Kepler.

The Kepler space telescope is tasked with finding other planets - some of which exists in a "habitable zone", meaning they could support life.

Likely, NASA teamed up with Google to build an algorithm for finding more exoplanets inside that untouched Kepler data, and this Thursday's announcement will reveal the first results.

At the teleconference, experts from NASA and Google will together explain the latest breakthrough discovery from the alien-hunting telescope, Kepler. NASA will reveal its findings in a press conference announced to take place on Thursday Dec. 14th at 1 p.m. EST, which is also going to be live-streamed on NASA's website.

Participants in the briefing include NASA Astrophysics Division director Paul Hertz, astronomer and NASA Sagan Postdoctoral Fellow Andrew Vanderburg, Kepler project scientist Jessie Dotson, and Google AI senior software engineer Christopher Shallue.

Kepler completed its prime mission in 2012 and went on to collect data for an additional year in an extended mission.

"When Kepler launched in March 2009, scientists didn't know how common planets were beyond our solar system".

NASA added: "The discovery was made by researchers using machine learning from Google".

NASA is encouraging the fans to take to social media to ask their questions about AI technology or alien life forms under the hashtag #askNASA.

But that's not all: the K2 trip has already turned up 515 candidate exoplanets, confirming 178 of those.

In 2014, the spacecraft began a new mission called K2, which continues the search for exoplanets while studying other cosmic phenomena. At that event, it said that it had found the "holy grail" - an entire solar system that could support life.
