Two flu-related deaths in Imperial County

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that a year ago in the United States alone, 25 million people suffered from influenza-related illnesses, resulting in 11 million flu-associated medical visits.

Professor Robert Dingwall, a public health expert at Nottingham Trent University, told the Daily Express it is expected to be the most serious flu outbreak since the 1968 pandemic that started in Hong Kong and killed more than a million people world wide.

Michael Hokanson with the North Central Health District says, "Not only will it protect you against the flu but even if some chance you do get the flu after getting the shot, it will make sure those symptoms that you get from the flu aren't as severe because the flu can become a serious illness if symptoms are allowed to go wild".

"Connecticut this week just reported its first case of a death related to influenza in the state, so it certainly can have pretty severe consequences", said UConn Health Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases Dr. Kevin Dieckhaus. Flu viruses didn't significantly change after the vaccine composition was determined, the CDC's most recent Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report reported, and a preliminary analysis of the Australian data suggests that the low effectiveness was not primarily due to any difference between the vaccine strain and circulating viruses.

The first flu-related death has been confirmed in CT. Because influenza and other viruses are easily spread where groups of people gather together, it is important to do your part to keep everyone around you healthy. In each case, distribution of the flu vaccine begins about 7 months later. At this time previous year, Memorial Medical Center in Springfield had treated 14 cases of influenza. The serum that is created for the new season's flu shots is based upon educated guesses and projections. There are dozens of different strains to be protected from - and the flu virus will change and alter itself as well.

Overall, emergency departments at hospitals across CT have reported a rise in visits from people with flu/fever syndrome, now over 5 percent, the report showed.

"A common myth is that the flu shot can give you the flu", said Swift.

Being vaccinated is the safest way to protect against the flu.

"The height of the season typically is in February", said Donahue.

It usually takes between one and three days for flu symptoms to develop after catching the virus. The United States looks internationally to predict what our flu season will look like.

H1N1, not surprisingly, still rings a bell with many people from the fall of 2009 scare, and all the clinics that were set up to get last-minute vaccine to children and those at risk as soon as possible.

McPhatter said it's hard to say at this point when the number of flu cases will peak in Grey-Bruce.

Public health says the flu shot is the best protection against flu. "What we're trying to is encourage people who have strong immune systems especially to get the influenza vaccination, because their ability to fight the flu and not have it will decrease transmission".
