Amsterdam airport cops shoot man with knife, officials say

"Man shot by the military police at Schiphol Airport after he threatened [people] with a knife", the force said on Twitter.

Verberkt told The Associated Press that "the circumstances are telling us that it has nothing to do with terrorism".

The Marechaussee police service tweeted the situation was "safe" and noted the suspect had been detained and removed from the scene.

Heavily armed military police, wearing body armor and ski masks, patrolled Schiphol for four hours while the man's bags were checked.

He was shot by military police, according to a tweet from Dutch police.

Other pictures show an area outside the Starbucks coffe shop cordoned off by police, suggesting that is where the incident upfolded.

Shocked travelers fled when the man, who has not been identified, began threatening crowds with his knife. Details about the suspect's condition and his injuries are not yet known. Air traffic was not affected.

The area of Schiphol Plaza was evacuated for 20 minutes.

But the airport tweeted later that the plaza was "reopened to the public again although a small part remained closed".

Opened in 1916 as a military airport, Schiphol became the country's primary airport in 1949, lying just about nine kilometers (five miles) southwest of Amsterdam.

Schiphol is one of Europe's top five busiest airports and handled more than 60 million passengers a year ago.
