2 militants killed in Shopian gunfight

Police said the slain militants were involved in a number of terror incidents including the December 11 attack on the vehicle of J&K Bank near Poju Shopian in which two bank guards were killed.

Two forces personnel, who included one armyman from 44 RR and a police personnel of Shopian Police, were, as per the spokesman, injured during the encounter.

The police, army and the CRPF had started the operation at Shopian's Wanipora village on Monday evening after they received a tip-off about the presence of terrorists.

Over eight civilians sustained injuries as protesters clashed with the security forces in Shopian's Batmurran area after the encounter left two militants dead.

In occupied Kashmir, Hurriyat leaders and organizations have paid glowing tributes to the two youth and a woman, who were killed by the Indian troops during a cordon and search operation in Shopian district.

The identity of the militants is being ascertained, said the police.

The retaliatory action by the forces on protesting civilians this morning wounded over a dozen people while a 30 year old woman, Rubeena (Beauty Jan), died on way to Pulwama district hospital. "She had bullet injuries in the abdomen and died on her arrival in the hospital", said a hospital official. The third militant, however, managed to escape the spot.

The locals according to reports staged massive pro-freedom protest protests in and around the encounter site. "The cordon was strengthened and the civilians of nearby area were evacuated", a police spokesman said.

The exchange of intermittent firing continued for the whole night while during wee hours, the armed forces planted an explosive device in the house and razed it.
