Local gas prices retreat to pre-Harvey levels

Good news for anyone planning to drive this holiday: AAA does not expect the national average to jump before the end of the year.

In September gas stations in San Antonio and across Texas were hit with shortages due to Hurricane Harvey related refinery outages and gas prices spiked.

Gas prices are 12 percent higher this year in Rhode Island than last year, when the average price of gas was $2.24 per gallon, a difference of 28 cents.

Meanwhile in South Florida, prices under $2.30 can be commonly found in competitive areas, including in Lake Worth along Lake Worth Road, Military Trail, Congress Avenue and 10th Avenue North, a check of the price-comparison website GasBuddy.com revealed.

"We can thank USA oil production, which has come a long way in the last five years", DeHaan said.

The average in Jacksonville was $2.29 on Monday, according to AAA.

There is still a potential for further reductions in price.

The average price in Florida increased from $2.35 a gallon on August 30 to $2.41 the following day and continued to rise throughout the week as Florida motorists waited in long lines to fill their tanks.

The national average for a gallon of gasoline has fallen for the fourth consecutive week, shedding 3.3 cents to stand at $2.41 per gallon, the lowest level in 110 days. The cheapest was $2.30 in the Tampa-St. Prices at the pump have been estimated to drop as much as eight more cents by Christmas Day.
