Facebook's new tool reveals any Russian propaganda account you liked or followed

Because the feature only reveals if users directly liked or followed pages on Facebook or Instagram, it won't alert users who viewed the propaganda on their news feeds or read the articles without actively following the accounts.

As NCRM has reported, Facebook told Congress in September that Russian operatives had purchased over $100,000 in ads ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Most of these propaganda related posts, according to TNW, were centered on gun control, LGBTQ issues, race and religion.

"As part of that continuing commitment, we will soon be creating a portal to enable people on Facebook to learn which of the Internet Research Agency Facebook Pages or Instagram accounts they may have liked or followed between January 2015 and August 2017".

However, the tool won't tell you if friends shared the content, and will not show you the content posted by the accounts or pages - only a list of the content.

Facebook's new service also doesn't allow users to check if they saw some of the roughly 3,000 election-timed ads purchased by Russia's notorious trolls, known as the Internet Research Agency. The new tool is placed somewhere in the Help Center of the social networking site.

Check now to see if you liked any Russian troll accounts on Facebook

Facebook announced the tool last month.

Moreover, although many discussions about the 2016 election have focused on the preponderance of "fake news", the ads Russian Federation bought didn't contain much in the way of news, real or fake.

Russian use of Facebook and other platforms like Twitter and YouTube to interfere in the 2016 elections has drawn close scrutiny from lawmakers, who at the beginning of November grilled the firms' top lawyers during a public Senate Intelligence Committee hearing.

'Our community continues to grow and our business is doing well, ' Zuckerberg said.

Facebook general counsel Colin Stretch told a hearing that Instagram posts by suspect Russian accounts were seen by some 20 million Americans past year. To further clear your doubts and enforce its claims, the social media giant launched the new portal where you can see if you have engaged with Pages linked to Russian trolls.
