Papa John's Founder Quits After NFL Remarks

The founder will stay with the company as a chairman, the press release said, while Steve Ritchie, a former franchise turned Chief Operating Officer, takes Schnatter's place as CEO.

"I am so proud of Steve - he has excelled at every job he's ever held at Papa John's - from being an hourly customer service rep, to a delivery driver, store general manager, director of operations, franchisee and most recently President", Schnatter said in the statement.

And that brings us to Friday's announcement that Schnatter will step down as the CEO of Papa John's following his remarks about NFL players protesting during the national anthem, as reported by NPR.

Forbes' numbers don't account for Papa John's recent sales slump - nor for Schnatter's controversial comments response last November.

The company even had to come out and say that they weren't pro-Nazi after some alt-right and white supremacist groups wanted to make Papa John's their official pizza after he slammed the racial injustice protests. The 56-year-old businessman came under major condemnation after he said Papa John's, an National Football League sponsor and advertiser, had been "hurt" by the "take a knee" protest led by African-American players that raised awareness about police brutality. Schnatter, who is the most public figure in the company, will remain the chairman of the board and the largest shareholder of Papa John's stock.

Papa John's will no longer have Papa John as CEO. The company now operates more than 5,000 locations.

"The NFL has hurt us", Schnatter said on November 1.

The website posted a picture of a Papa John's pizza with a swastika fashioned from pepperoni. "That definitely was not our intention", the company said on Twitter.

Schnatter is the face of the company as well and appears in marketing and images for the company. "We also believe together, as Americans, we should honor our anthem".

A major shakeup has happened at Papa John's.
