China defends sanctions work after report of NK oil transfer

Tensions have flared anew over North Korea's ongoing nuclear and missile programmes, pursued in defiance of years of United Nations resolutions. China has voted in favor of three UN Security Council resolutions strengthening sanctions on the North since the summer. Trump tweeted, while on a holiday break in Florida.

Such ship-to-ship trades are banned under a UN Security Council resolution adopted in September, but according to South Korean government sources, American satellites have pictured large vessels from both China and North Korea illegally trading in a stretch of the West Sea on multiple occasions.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday said he was "very disappointed that China is allowing oil to go into North Korea" and that such moves would prevent "a friendly solution" to the crisis over Pyongyang's nuclear program.

The comments come after South Korean newspaper reported Chinese and North Korean vessels had been illicitly linking up at sea to get oil to North Korea.

Despite softening his stance towards Beijing in an effort to secure more assistance on issue areas relating to the Korean Peninsula, Trump has listed China among key threats to the United States and global security in his new national security strategy.

While Russia exports some oil to North Korea, China is the main source of oil for the rogue nation, according to Reuters.

South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, citing government sources in Seoul, reported earlier this week that U.S. satellites had spotted Chinese ships selling oil to North Korean vessels dozens of times since October. The US Treasury Department later placed six North Korean shipping and trading companies and 20 of their vessels on sanctions list. The country also has not been importing any iron ore, coal or lead from North Korea during the mentioned period, as the media specified.

"We urge China to end all economic ties with the DPRK, including tourism, and the provision of any oil or petroleum products, and expel all DPRK workers", he said, using the acronym for North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
