Ex-soccer star Weah elected Liberia president by wide margin

Thousands of jubilant supporters of President-elect George Weah took to the streets in Liberia's capital Monrovia to celebrate their candidate's victory over incumbent Vice-President Joseph Boakai.

The congratulatory message was contained in a statement issued Friday by Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media & publicity.

"President Buhari also commends the Liberian people on the peaceful conduct of the historic presidential run-off election", he said, stressing that "this is another plus on Africa's democratic scoreboard".

Ms Howard-Taylor is the ex-wife of former Liberian president Charles Taylor, who is serving 50 years in a British prison for war crimes in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

Buhari says Nigeria is ready to work with Liberia on issues of mutual interest and called Weah's victory "an affirmation of the will of the Liberian people to remain united, peaceful and prosperous".

Vice President Boakai conceded defeat on Friday and congratulated Weah on the result of Tuesday's run-off presidential election. "All we are asking is for all Liberians to come together so we can build our country".

Addressing supporters in Monrovia, Boakai promised to provide support to Weah, but he also reminded him of Liberia's fragile economy and the challenges that lie ahead.

The results were almost identical to those announced on Thursday evening by the commission after 98 percent of returns. He played for top local clubs before starting his worldwide career in Cameroon, then moved on to AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, where he became famous. A Nobel Laureate, Johnson is credited with restoring peace after the civil war.

With more than 98 percent of votes counted late Thursday, Weah received 61.5 percent of ballots while Vice President Joseph Boakai received 38.5 percent. She led the country from back-to-back civil wars and saw it through a deadly Ebola outbreak that killed almost 5,000 Liberians but was criticized for not tackling corruption better.

The 51-year-old Weah, a senator who entered politics after his 2002 retirement, led the first-round election in October but didn't receive enough votes to win outright.
