TaxSlayer Bowl: Lamar Jackson's mistake-filled day leads to Mississippi State win

TaxSlayer Bowl: Lamar Jackson's mistake-filled day leads to Mississippi State win

Jackson's 50th career rushing touchdown came in the second quarter of Louisville's matchup against No. 23 Mississippi State in the Taxslayer Bowl. But make no mistake, Jackson is a dynamic threat that has accounted for 4,932 yards and 42 touchdowns this year.

The holiday season bowls just keep on coming, don't they?

Louisville: Coach Bobby Petrino likely will have to replace Jackson, which will be no easy task.

"He was phenomenal", Bulldogs interim coach Greg Knox said.

The MSU defense picked off 2016 Heisman Trophy victor Lamar Jackson four times.

Jackson had the Cardinals (8-5) on the move late, but safety Mark McLaurin intercepted his third pass of the game.

Jackson ran 24 times for 158 yards and a touchdown, breaking the TaxSlayer Bowl record for most rushing yards by a quarterback.

Louisville appeared to be driving down the field for a game-winning score until Jackson threw his fourth interception of the day, giving Mississippi State the ball back with just 2:31 left.

The Bulldogs finished the season 9-4.

Thompson completed 11 of 20 passes for 127 yards, with an interception. West Virginia's Pat White set the previous mark with 145 yards in 2007.

Although some Mississippi State fans are still bitter about former head coach Dan Mullen's departure, there's no denying he had made the Bulldogs relevant again, leaving behind a wealth of talent for new head coach Joe Moorhead.

If he is leaving, he went out setting records.

According to the Florida Times-Union, Jackson plans to announce whether he will enter the National Football League draft or return for his senior season sometime after the bowl game.

NOTES: Lamar Jackson is the only player in FBS history to rush for at least 1,500 yards and pass for at least 3,500 yards in a season. He also has a rushing score, so that playing experience could be beneficial, especially considering the Cardinals open next season against perennial power Alabama in nearby Orlando on September 1.
