White House Fires Remaining Members Of HIV/AIDS Advisory Council

The Trump administration has terminated the appointments of the remaining members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, a statement from the council's executive director confirmed this week.

In an interview with the Washington Blade, Maldonado argued that although turnover between administrations is not uncommon, the recent terminations were abnormal for two reasons: These terminations came almost a full year into the new administration, and many Obama appointees had been only recently re-sworn in under President Trump at the end of their Obama-appointed terms when Trump extended PACHA through executive order in September 2017: "It is common for appointees to be terminated and for folks to kind of want their own people in".

Lawyer Scott Shoettes, who resigned from the committee in June, called Trump's decision "dangerous", adding in a tweet that his administration was "eliminating the few remaining people willing to push back against harmful policies, like abstinence-only sex education".

Established by President Bill Clinton in 1995, the council can have up to 25 members who are appointed to four-year terms by the secretary of health and human services in consultation with the White House. "I would like President Trump to remember what the epidemic had done not just to the LGBT community, but the entire country". This follows six of the council members resigning from their positions in June, citing Trump's regressive legislation and inaction on the global HIV/AIDS crisis as the reasons in an open letter to Newsweek.

The firing came six months after six council members resigned. During the Obama administration, a majority of George W. Bush's appointees were cleared out to make room for new faces.

'Like any administration, they want their own people there. "I was an Obama appointee and my term was continuing until 2018", he said.

One of the people fired, Gabriel Maldonado, CEO of Truevolution in Riverside, Calif., told The Blade that he had time remaining on his appointment to the board.

'Many of us, our terms were over earlier this year and we were sworn back in, ' Maldonado revealed. The Republican-controlled Congress has thus far continued to fund these programs at previous levels.

"The timing is a little bit unorthodox compared to what the Obama administration's approach was", Maldonado said.

Nonetheless, HIV and AIDS activists criticized the Trump administration. Globally, there are 37 million people estimated to be carrying the disease.

Vice President Mike Pence, who has been running the administration behind the scenes as Trump continues his Twitter wars with the media, science, and fellow politicians, is vociferously anti-LGBT and has continuously shown resistance to combating HIV.
