Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer announces retirement after 15 National Football League seasons

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer announced his retirement Tuesday in an open letter after 14 seasons with three teams. The 38-year-old quarterback was the top overall pick in the 2003 NFL Draft following an illustrious career at USC, winning a Heisman Trophy.

"Over the years, I've had teammates who made a decision to hang it up and I would ask them how they knew when it was time to walk away", Palmer wrote.

"For me that time is now. Why? The answer was nearly always the same: 'You just know.'" Palmer said in a letter published by the Cardinals. Those are details that I know fade with time. Palmer then spent eight seasons with the Bengals before a short stint with the Raiders.

Palmer was reduced to just seven games this season after breaking his left arm and was placed on injured reserve with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions.

"For 15 years I have been lucky enough to play quarterback in the National Football League and it has been the most incredible experience of my life". He owns the second-best passer rating (91.1) in Cardinals' history (Kurt Warner) and finished with a 92-91-1 record in the regular season (1-3 in the postseason).

In Arizona, Palmer doubled his number of playoff games from two to four and had the best season of his career in 2015, when he threw for a career-high 4,671 yards and 35 touchdowns.

With Palmer and Arians moving on, the team is still awaiting word from future Hall of Fame wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald on his plans for 2018.
