The people entering the United States have posted their images on different social media sites of long lines at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport.

An outage hit the Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) computer systems and left global travellers waiting in long lines at airports throughout the USA last night.

The processing system outage began at about 7:30 p.m. EST (0030 GMT) and was resolved about 9:30 EST (0230 GMT), the customs agency said in a statement.

The outage is affecting other airports across the county, according to an official familiar with the situation.

"The machines for customs and border patrol aren't working, so all the things are printing out with X's on them and everyone's freaking out, so the lines about an hour to get thru", said Brittany Jason. All airports are now back online.

CBP said "there is no indication the service disruption was malicious in nature". CBP officers continued to process global travelers using alternative procedures at affected airports.

CBP officers continued to process global passengers using alternative procedures, but the agency acknowledged that travelers at some ports of entry experienced longer than usual wait times.

The department said it was still able to screen travellers using "national security-related databases".

Even modern systems such as the Amadeus Altea are prone to random failures, the website says.
