FCC's Ajit Pai cancels CES appearance

FCC's Ajit Pai cancels CES appearance

Since the commission voted to repeal so-called net neutrality rules, resistance has solidified, with the FCC expected to find itself involved in a number of legal battles in 2018.

This will be the first time Pai has not attended the conference in five years. Shapiro has voiced his support for Pai's controversial reversal of net neutrality legislation as well.

While the Federal Bureau of Investigation did not immediately respond to Recode, a spokesperson for the Consumer Technology Association, which hosts the event, declined to comment, and an FCC spokesman for Pai said the agency does "not comment on security measures or concerns".

On Dec. 14, the Federal Communications Commission adopted its Restoring internet Freedom Order (RIF Order) repealing public utility-like regulations imposed on internet service providers in 2015 by the Obama administration FCC.

But it's turned out that FCC chairman Ajit Pai's hasty move may have provided the extra push needed to get a municipal broadband alternative properly off the ground in the US. It was sources speaking to Recode that said Pai's cancellation was thanks to death threats.

Shapiro said he was optimistic about the future of net neutrality legislation, despite Pai's recent rulings.

Now, Pai and his office, according to Recode, apparently feel he should abandon his plans to attend CES, the worldwide Consumer Electronics Show, due to violent threats. His name has become near-synonymous with the rollback of net neutrality protections of the internet, a decision that is unpopular among many consumers because of the power it gives internet service providers to create so-called "internet fast lanes", and to establish paid prioritization among companies that can afford it.

The two commissioners who voted to keep net neutrality are Democrats, while the three who chose to scrap it are members of the Republican Party. Businesses could also be restricted in their use of some cloud services.
