Reports of E. Coli bacteria found in romaine lettuce in Indiana

A new warning has been issued by Consumer Reports to avoid romaine lettuce while USA and Canadian health officials continue their investigation after 58 people were reported sick from E. coli infections, NBC News reported. The infections within the USA have occurred in 13 states, including NY.

Fifty-eight people in the US and Canada have gotten sick from the bacteria in the last few weeks, and one person in each country has died. There has also been one death in Canada.

Because a USA source hasn't been identified, the CDC has been unable to issue advice on food choices, but Consumer Reports is advising people avoid romaine lettuce for the time being. Two of the hospitalized patients developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

Consumer Reports advises everyone to avoid buying romaine lettuce and to throw out any you may already have until there's more information about the source of the contamination.

"The available data strongly suggest that romaine lettuce is the source of the USA outbreak".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating the outbreak, which has affected 13 states including Ohio. So far, 17 illnesses in 13 states have been reported, with patients' symptoms starting between November 15 and December 8, the CDC said.

A warning from the CDC is urging people to be cautious of eating romaine lettuce after almost 60 people were infected by E. coli bacteria, CBS Los Angeles reports. The Public Health Agency of Canada has reported on 41 illnesses and say the cases are related to romaine lettuce.

Jean Halloran, director of food policy initiatives at Consumers Union, a division of Consumer Reports, said the US Food and Drug Administration should follow Canada's example and immediately warn the public about the potential risk from romaine lettuce.

Fowlie told ABC News Thursday that the CDC is still collecting information to determine whether there is a food item in common among the sick people, including leafy greens and romaine. "Depending on how it was contaminated, if it was in one large place and it's the water that was contaminated, that could have implications for other food materials that might have been exposed". "People in these groups should be particularly vigilant about avoiding romaine lettuce", Rogers said. "Although some sick people reported eating romaine lettuce, preliminary data available at this time shows they were not more likely than healthy people to have eaten romaine, based on a CDC food consumption survey".
