Roy Moore Accuser Is Suing Him For Defamation

Roy Moore Accuser Is Suing Him For Defamation

Corfman alleges that Moore sexually abused her in 1979 when she was 14 years old and he a 32-year-old Etowah County assistant district attorney.

Corfman says she was 14 when Moore, then a prosecutor in his 30s, touched her during an encounter.

In response, Moore said Corfman's allegations were "politically motivated", "completely false", and "malicious".

Corfman's lawsuit is an opportunity for her to pursue legal action against Moore even though the statute of limitations on the alleged assault has run out. Moore lost the election to Democratic nominee Doug Jones, who was sworn into office Wednesday.

A phone message left by AL.com at the office of Moore attorney Trent Garmon was not immediately returned Thursday.

The lawsuit also cites comments from Moore campaign surrogates - including campaign chairman Bill Armistead and campaign manager Rich Hobson, now running for Congress - that suggested Corfman was lying, including a comment from Moore spokeswoman Janet Porter that Corfman's appearance on the Today show was "an Academy Award performance". This includes Moore's defense that he never knew or met Corfman.

Corfman's lawsuit says the attacks forced her to take a leave of absence from her job and led to fabricated accusations against her from the public. Just last week, after the election, they filed a lawsuit in which they once again called me a liar. She also seeks "further relief" which isn't clarified with any dollar amount.

"Mr. Moore's continued attacks against Ms. Corfman after the election and the content of his affidavit demonstrate that if not enjoined, he will continue to defame Ms. Corfman, if simply for the objective of furthering his political goals", Corfman's attorney wrote in the lawsuit.

"Ms. Corfman is a private citizen whose only motivation is to clear her name and to stop Mr. Moore and the Moore Campaign Committee from continuing their defamatory attacks on her", the lawsuit said.

"All these statements by Mr. Moore are defamatory", the lawsuit said. Corfman seeks no financial compensation besides her legal expenses, her attorney, Neil Roman, told the paper.
