Gruden could be next Raiders coach by Tuesday

Gruden could be next Raiders coach by Tuesday

It looks like Jon Gruden is going to rack up some frequent flier miles during his first season as coach of the Raiders.

The Raiders fired Jack Del Rio following a disappointing six-win season and talk immediately turned to Gruden. Gruden spent four years as coach for the Raiders before being dealt to Tampa Bay, where he beat Oakland in the Super Bowl following his first season in 2002.

Gruden beat the Raiders in the Super Bowl in his first season with the Buccaneers but didn't win another playoff game for Tampa Bay in his final six seasons.

Plus, Alabama and Georgia will square off in the 2018 College Football National Championship on Monday.

Gruden coached in Oakland from 1998 to 2001. Television ratings dropped 9.7 percent, and there are varying theories to explain the decline.

Appearing at a fan forum aired live on 106.7 The Fan, the local radio station on which the quarterback makes weekly regular-season appearances, Cousins said Friday he believes the Redskins are "all-in" on trying to sign him to a long-term contract. Remember, this is the same league that contends that Colin Kaepernick isn't good enough to be on an NFL roster because he wasn't playing at an elite level on a very bad football team. The question is whether Gruden is the right coach to get that $100 million. The offense regressed after the decision to fire coordinator Bill Musgrave and replace him with untested Todd Downing.

Gordon and record-setting pilot and eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes were among seven people selected for the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. He was at the helm when Oakland returned to the playoffs the next season and lost to the New England Patriots in the "Tuck rule" game.

Other teams have also done it, one of the most notable examples being Joe Gibbs in Washington. Gibbs stepped away after the 1992 season with three Super Bowl titles in his career.

A second person with knowledge of the team's plans said one of the minority candidates who interviewed was tight ends coach Bobby Johnson.

"Just like quarterback, OC and QB coach are considered 'thinking man' positions", a former African-American player and current assistant told USA TODAY Sports. Is UCF better than Georgia or Alabama?
