Titans rally to edge Chiefs 22-21 in playoffs

Tennessee went for the two-point conversion, but Mariota was sacked by Daniel Sorenson, who forced a fumble that was scooped up and returned for an apparent safety that appeared to give the Chiefs the lead again.

After leading the Chiefs to a 21-3 halftime lead over Tennessee, the veteran quarterback watched in horror as everything unraveled. The Titans kept the ball and kicked a field goal to cut the Chiefs' lead to 14-3.

Also not blown away: Chiefs coach Andy Reid, who was asked after the team's latest playoff loss about Triplette's forward-progress calls. They've won four straight games, while the Titans have lost three of their last four.

The team is led by rookie running back Kareem Hunt who led the league in rushing (1,327 yards). Kansas City made it 14-0 when quarterback Alex Smith hit tight end Travis Kelce for a 13-yard score. On the second play of that possession, Kelce caught a 12-yard pass and was hit extremely hard by S Johnathan Cyprien, who legally led with his shoulder but accidentally caught Kelce in a helmet-to-helmet collision.

The Chiefs seemed to retake the momentum when Tennessee's Adoree' Jackson fumbled the ensuing punt and KC recovered, but three fruitless plays later, rookie kicker Harrison Butker doinked a 48-yard attempt off the left upright - evoking shades of Elliott, who missed a game-winning kick in the waning seconds of a 10-7 loss to Indianapolis in a January 7, 1996 divisional-round game.

Mariota improved to 2-14 in his career when trailing by 14 or more points, per ESPN Stats & Information, with both victories coming in Kansas City. For the second year in a row, the Titans held the Chiefs offense to zero points scored in the second half of a game.

Kansas City (10-6) is heavily favored heading into the game thanks to the Arrowhead advantage and its recent four-game winning streak.

The Chiefs needed a break, and seemed to get it when Peters stripped the ball from Henry; Johnson recovered the ball and ran it back 56 yards.

That has become a familiar refrain for the Chiefs in the playoffs.
