Trump shamelessly uses "Dreamers" as leverage for border wall funding

Trump shamelessly uses

"But yes, in some form, Mexico will pay for the wall". The funds would be used in the next 10 years in order to expand the fences in about 1,600 kilometers that now cover about 1,050 kilometers, which would mean coverage of about half of the US Southwest border.

After confusing the civilized world with his brand of "uniqueness" over the past year, Trump has now reached a new low: I'll fix your DACA problem if you give me money for my border wall.

This would bring total coverage to 1,552 kilometres, or almost half the border.

Trump has demanded a border wall in exchange for passing legislation that would shield from deportation hundreds of thousands of young migrants brought to the United States as children, known as Dreamers. Durbin is now working with four other Senators, three of whom are Republican, on a deal that will protect DACA while also beefing up border security, but it appears Trump's demands could stall talks.

At the time of the repeal, both President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions claimed that the "Dreamers" were lawbreakers, and that "virtually all" the "top legal experts" believed that DACA was unconstitutional.

Trump on Friday added the wall funding request to a list of conditions he sent to Congress in early October including an end to chain migration policies and the diversity lottery

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., hit back at President Donald Trump over his demands for an immigration deal, saying recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), known as Dreamers, were not "bargaining chips", The Hill reported Friday.

Republicans countered that the Democrats' proposals for immigration were just as "ridiculous".

The subject came up during a sit-down meeting with GOP lawmakers at the White House on Thursday.

"President Trump has said he may need a good government shutdown to get his wall", Dick Durbin, the No 2 Senate Democrat, said in a statement in response to the administration's proposed border plan.
